The plight of street children

“May I never be too busy in my own affairs that I fail to respond to the needs of others with kindness and compassion”, these kind words spoken by the third President of America Thomas Jefferson will continue lingering throughout history and echoe in most of the peoples’ minds forever.
One of the street boys at Grandsons filling a newspaper crossword
At Grandsons of Abraham Rescue Centre Mikindani I am preparing to have a counseling session with the newly admitted street children. As usual when I entered the class I wrote the date at the board, 27th April 2010. The day before Daniel had agreed to be the first to share his story.
‘I have been in the street since I was a child. Life there is very tough Mwalimu and sometimes I hate myself, my parents and all the people’, said a bitter Daniel.
‘I don’t have a place to call home thank you to Grandsons for giving me shelter, I don’t have people to call family am nobody just like a tree without roots can never survive’, he furrowed his brows and I could see tears at a distance in his eyes.
‘I feel so sorry for you Daniel, I  feel what you are going through however, better spilled water than a broken pot, speak all that is hurting you am here to listen and help you’, I empathized with him quoting Achebes’ literature.
He took a deep breath out as someone who has offloaded a heavy load. All of the boys were silent and listening attentively. An eerie cloud of sadness had started shrouding the entire classroom. The weather outside was calm and cloudy. I could hear birds outside making joyful jingles may be to the creator.
“I wish people would take note of the street children and stop abusing them. I didn’t choose to live at the street it is because I had no option. I had to beg for people to give me food, I stayed for months without taking bath, I slept on the floor outside the street shops. There are so many tribulation Mwalimu street children go through’, said a bitter Daniel.
Erick a young boy of around twelve years I guess was abandoned by her single parent mysteriously.
‘We used to live in the streets of Nairobi. One day on our mission to look for food around Nairobi railway, my mother sneaked me in the train and said to me she was going for a call of nature’, explained an innocent Erick.
‘Having gotten friends in the train and started playing together it never occurred to me that my mother had abandoned me’, sadly explained Erick.
‘It is almost five years now since my mother left me, sometimes I think maybe she was not my mother, for how can a mother do such a thing to her child’, an upset Erick cut short  the story and paused.
I didn’t realize Faustine the house parent was standing at the door listening to the boys until one of the boy welcomed him inside.
‘Mwalimu has been conducting street work, he has a lot to share in his experiences as a professional child care’, said the boy in good English.
‘Thank you Hamisi for welcoming me, there are many unfortunate incidents which cause these children to end up In the streets’, said Mr. Faustine. ‘Most of the cases I have experienced are being abused by their people or abandoned. Poverty of highest magnitude, death of parents and conflicts at home among other reasons’, explained a humble Faustine.
‘Once on the street the children are exposed to risk behavior like crime, violence and drugs, they resort to robbery and begging in order to survive and become addicted to inhaling glue and other toxic substances that destroy their brain hence memory lapse’, said Mwalimu Faustine.
Lost in thoughts I was pondering what these children do when they are attacked by sickness, when I was back to the real world and asked Mwalimu Faustine, he pitied the children saying the society had neglected and deprived them of medical care, education, and proper nutrition.
‘They suffer and endure pain from easily treatable diseases such as skin parasites, head lice, asthma, tuberculosis, bilharzia among others’.
The rain had started pouring heavily now disrupting our session that we could not communicate to each other, the wall clock read a few minutes to lunch time, that moment Matata one of the boys who was the Chef cook on duty came and said food was ready; the children who are used to collect food from dumping sites hurriedly left happily to enjoy the meal of green vegetable and rice donated by well wishers.
Volunteering your time, skills and knowledge to work with vulnerable groups like street children requires a special disposition that not everybody can claim to have however, it is the most rewarding thing a person can ever do to make a difference to people living in adversity.
In her most famous quotes Mother Teresa noted that not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love.

MARENDE HAS SPOKEN WELL

Speaker Kenneth Marende
The ruling by the Speaker of National Assembley Kenneth Marende was fairly and objective. In his 45 minutes ruling Marende was very clearly that collectively as Kenyans we have a responsibility of defending the constitution at the same time encourage the spirit of peace, love and unity. To avoid political party blame game Marende was very quick to note that and directed the matter to be solved by relevant committee of the house. It has gone in history books once again after the Speaker of  National Assembley last year set a precedence by taking the position of Chairperson of House Business which had ignited row between the Prime Minister and the President. Untill the two Principals agreed on who take that position it is when the Speaker stopped functioning.

VIOLATION OF THE SUPREME LAW MUST STOP

Am writing to all Kenyans who believe in the rule of law and encourage to inculcate the national values to the upcoming generations. The recent appointments of the Chief Justice of the Court of Appeal,Attorney General,Director of Public Prosecution and Controller of budget by President Kibaki is not vested on the public interest. The President move is unconstitutional and should not be encouraged following the Supreme Law of our country. For natural justice to prevail the due process of the appointment of the above mentioned position should follow what the new constitution says, that the JSC should be involved in the process and the positions advertised for elligable Kenyans to contest without drawing lines of gender. It starts with me and you quoting Mother Teresa she once said don't wait for leaders,do it person to person. The moment we collectivelly as Kenyans stand to protect the supreme law this country would change,we might not reach our objective but believe me we can do something positve done.It should not be interpreted that this article is against the people appointed but the process is the point of main concern.

WHO HAS THE 2012 MAGIC WAND?

Who has the magic wand for Kenya politics coming 2012? Could it be Raila, Kalonzo,Karua, or Uhuru and Ruto? The Kenya politics recently has been observed by media, political analyst, lawyers and members of the human rights watchdog fraternity that it is still living in the old dogmas of ethnic grouping. A movement dubbed KKK by most Kenyans that constitutes the three tribes namely Kalenjin, Kamba, and Kikuyu is a victim of the old shape of politics. Although the three leaders from the said tribes have denied the so called movement, in the eyes of the informed Kenyans am convinced they have to work extra hard to mend the already impact made.

Kenya Prime Minister;the man to watch coming 2012

The recent President Kibaki peace and reconcilliation rally in Rift Valley brought an outbreak of succession politics. According to several published newspaper in Kenya, they reported of what could be the President option if not the scion of the Minister for finance Uhuru Kenyatta and the Eldoret North MP William Ruto. When the President stood to give his speech he signalled the Eldoret MP William Ruto to stand, that moment brought the impression of the 2012 race to the state house.
In what appeared to be a plot to sideline the Kenya Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and the PM Raila Odinga by age factor, from the eyes of intellectual Kenyans it is an issue of what have you done in this country to shape democracy and governace.
The 2012 political equation seems to lie more on the PM Raila Odinga side. Of all the aspirants he enjoys the national support from the youth because of his ideology on democracy and governance. The earlier the Vice President realise the truth of this matter and support the PM as his running mate, he would never regret his political career coming 2012, watch this there is a tsunami coming to disappoint the KKK in what we call reshaping of Kenya politics, this is a prophecy that will linger in history and continue ringing in your mind.

MWAVUMBO AND DEVELOPMENT

A country whose infrastructure is in good condition is able to conduct business more easily and offer better services. The Economic Recovery Strategy (ERS) for poverty eradication and wealth creation identifies good roads as fundamental to overall economic development.
Kwale district is among the major beneficiaries of funds allocated for roads construction the financial year 2006/2007. Comparing the districts, Kwale and Nyeri got the highest allocation at ksh 597M and ksh 552M respectively. The kitty is part of the 15 billion which the Kenya Road Boards will receive by 2015 for roads construction. The cash will be collected from the road maintenance levy funds.
Mariakani-Kalalani road which is the shortest way to Kinango.
The day was November 3rd of 2006 around noon and i'm on the way to meet the now late Mzee Charo Mbaita former Kalalani Village Elder. As I entered his home compound i'm welcomed by a silent home stead, I suspect there are no children may be.
Although the temperature was almost nearing forties, the Old man was inside his small makuti mad house and as I knocked the door I saw his Old wife who welcomed me inside. A citrus scent lingered in the air as if somebody was peeling some lemons, Mzee Charo sat on the Old traditional bed knitted with ropes making the top plat form look like a mat.
After a while of familiarizing with the subject of my interview for the second time I think so, Mzee Charo recollects his old memories, clears his throat and starts narrating about the Kalalani- Mariakani road which is the shortest way to Kinango.
“Let me tell you, this road was first made by residents to facilitate marketing conditions and communication”, said Mzee Charo.
He appeared uncomfortable when he requested we go outside the house I guess because of the heat ,as he was walking out i could tell the Old man was not well, though he tried step by step supporting himself with a stick.
Now sitting on the traditional stool and enjoying the fresh breeze Mzee Charo started to flash back the old gone days again and continues.
“When the late Johnson Peter Mwero was the area Chief back in the years 1960s, he tried his best to see the road condition was good. He was the first administrator to initiate a Food for work program where residents would work to maintain the road in good condition and in return are given relief food”.
Mzee Charo was born in 1928 in Mwavumbo location and has served as the Village Elder for almost 10 years since 1990 and this explains why he knows well the history of the area better having served during the Johnson Peter era. They say old is gold and listening to this old man opening an archive he has kept for a long time it truly justifies that saying.
“Later on the government came in to support and started to maintain the road through the Kwale County Council”, he explained.
Though he looked sick, Mzee Mbaita expressed strength in telling the story. He excused himself and went for a short call. Walking by the support of his stick, the Old man skirted at the back of his house where the toilet was; a square shape grass covered sideways and open at the top.
“During the el-nino rain the road condition became pathetic”, he furrowed his brow and continued, “a large number of school pupils learning in Mariakani were terrible affected not forgetting people working in the urban area, transportation and business collapsed”, painful explained the old man.
He was annoyed by the government of the people that is suppose to make good use of the tax payers money, was squandering the cash by allowing corrupt individuals to manage governments projects, the end results is no development. He said if the government had intervened and renovated the road, then it would have at least reduced one of the major problems of the community.
“Transportation would not be a problem anymore, milk business, building blocks, sand soil business would have been facilitated and our children would go to school without fear of floods, the bridge connecting Kalalani and Mariakani was destroyed by heavy rain in 1980s”, explained the Old man.
In the annual public road program for the financial year 2006/2007, the road was not listed in Kwale rural roads or in the constituency as one of the roads which needs priority in the spirit of maendeleo.
He explained sadly that even after the road was proposed in one of the Locational meeting, the other road projects in Gwasheni and Mwabila proposed in the same meeting were done except the Mariakani Kalalani road.
“I recall very well that the all Locational learders meeting was in 18/08/2006 and the area Chief Patrick Kalu as the Chairperson of all Locations projects attended”, said Mzee Charo wa Mbaita.
He excused himself and moved slowly to send away some goats that were grazing around his shamba and commanded a woman who sat below a shade in duruma,
“Hebu hala zoo mbuzi na umwiheh yeh murisah akarisee, zoo saa zifikah” (take the goats and call the shepherd its grazing time).
However, Mzee Charo Mbaita applauded President Kibaki for his tireless effort in contribution of this nation development. He cited the Maji ya Chumvi to Miritini road project as one of the major achievements of President Kibaki government.
In his final words as I prepared to go the Old man had a message to the youth,
“The youth should work hard if they want to see this country progressing”.
As I write today I can’t forget what the king of reggae Bob Marley once said, that the good stories of today are the sad stories of tomorrow, which justifies what the Writer of the River and the source Grace Ogot said that yesterday is not today and today is not tomorrow each day you see glorify to the God almighty.
Rest in peace Mzee Charo Mbaita.
